Roddy and Thomas have come to a decision that will test their love. Will it tear them apart or make their bond stronger?

A Foxgrove Wedding Foxgrove Hall Book 3 edition by DC Williams Literature Fiction eBooks

This short story is really very well written, with fully developed characters. It's the third book in the Foxgrove Hall series, a story about two gay lovers during the regency period...at least I think it's regency set, though I could be wrong. In any event, this is the first book in the series that I've read. Not having read the first two books did not in any way impede my ability to follow this story.

The overall feeling I had as I read this book was one of sadness.

Roderick is the younger son of a baron. Thomas is the baron's estate manager. Of course, because of the time in which they live, Roderick and Thomas cannot openly be involved in a relationship with each other. Furthermore, should it be found out that they participate in sexual relations with each other, they could be hung for the crime of sodomy. In order to protect themselves, as well as enable them to continue in their clandestine relationship, Roderick decides to marry. He chooses the fifteen year old daughter of one of his father's tenant farmers. This added to my feeling of sorrow.

All I found myself thinking was what was going to happen to poor Bitty when she finally grew up? Didn't she deserve at least the chance to find a man who could care for her as a woman? That being said, Bitty and Roddy do have a very sweet relationship and are great companions. Furthermore, Bitty's marriage into the aristocracy greatly enhanced her family's standing in society and provided much improved opportunities for her younger brother (the same reason many other people got married in those times.)

The worst part of the story for me was the fact that Roddy and Thomas, who clearly loved each other, could not be together and openly declare their love...shoot they couldn't even live together and secretly share a life. The fact that they planned to continue their relationship by seeing each other once every three to four weeks was so depressing.

The author certainly kept her story and characters true to the time in which they are set, but in this instance a bit of the unrealistic would have gone a long way to ease my misgivings.

I've read a number of gay romance novels, granted they've been more in the line of erotic, rather than just straight romance like this one. But, in the books I have read, the authors usually find some way to allow the lovers to be together, albeit not openly. Thus, although the reader knows the protagonists have to hide their love from the outside world, at least they are together. Here Thomas and Roddy seeing each other every few weeks, made me want to cry. Consequently, the book left me feeling a bit depressed. I prefer my romance novels to be more uplifting.

Three stars because the book is excellently written, but as far as enjoyment, I didn't get much. BTW I've watched the controversy relating to a couple of the negative reviews this book received. I will refrain from making comment about the reviewers, or speculating as to the reasons the reviewers gave them. I noticed since I purchased this book, one of the negative reviews has been removed; no doubt due to the number of attacks against that reviewer. What I would like to comment on is the fact that these books not only come up during a search for gay romance, as many seem to believe. This book came up when I did a search for historical romance...as does many other gay romance novels, including erotic ones. Just wanted to point that out. Happy reading!

A Foxgrove Wedding Foxgrove Hall Book 3 edition by DC Williams Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I took a chance on this one as there was no synopsis, and found this to be a story of love between two men. The writing itself was good, and I thought possibly another story would be laced into it. But no, that didn't happen.

This was free, but I would appreciate a heads up in the future. Having an idea of what the story is about would save me some time and the author the possibility of a bad review.

If the reader is looking for a heterosexual romance, this is not for you.
I thought this was a cute short story, and really liked the way the author's prose set the period mood. The characters, part of an ongoing story, are likeable as well.

I think my main criticism of this book would be the it lacks emotion. Nothing that happens seems to impact the couple, and given that this book is about one gay character marrying a woman to protect himself, you'd think they would have some emotional moments.

Also, there is a plausibility issue to me regarding having a committed lifelong relationship if you only contact each other once a month.

But this is a short story, not a deep involved character study or sweeping romance. It does stand on its own, but probably will be better for those who have read the other stories about this pair.

I am saddened when I see books panned because they have gay characters. 15% or more of the population is LGBT, it is right and normal that they should show up in books. This book is not full of gay sex (although I think there is one scene, it is toward the end and easily passed over). Scrolling to the bottom of the product page will give you access to all of the categories a book is part of. People who find LGBT issues offensive should check carefully that the books they buy are not cross categorized in LGBT sections. However, authors have no responsibility to warn people that their books have gay characters, any more than they need to warn about Black characters or characters with disabilities or any other subset of the population (it is nice if they warn of erotic content, but that goes for any book with sex scenes) . If you find a book has gay characters and you cannot tolerate that segment of the population, allows refunds within 7 days (go to "manage my kindle").
This, the third entry in the "Foxgrove Hall" series, is as fine as the first two. The author captures the tone of the period brilliantly, both in the prose and the dialogue. Roddy and Thomas are eminently endearing characters striving to obey the dictates of society while preserving their profound love for each other. Williams is a superb writer who makes them come alive in a vivid world. My only disappointment is that this story ends so abruptly. But it is highly enjoyable. I recommend the series.
